Overview

Purpose. A creative twist that reveals how participants imagine others see them.

When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.

Best for. Groups of 5–100, in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • No materials to gather; just read through the steps once before you run it.

Room setup. Open enough floor space for pairs to spread out and hear only their own partner.

Virtual setup. Run this over video call using breakout rooms for pairs.

Hybrid setup. Pair remote participants with each other for the paired round.

Materials.

How to Conduct

  1. Split participants into pairs.
  2. Explain the format: each person will introduce themselves as they imagine someone else in their life would describe them, for example a parent, a close friend, or even their bank manager.
  3. Give partners a minute or two to think about whose perspective they'll use.
  4. Have each person introduce themselves to their partner “through” that other person's eyes.
  5. Once both partners have gone, switch pairs and repeat if time allows, so people hear a few different self- introductions.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Most groups laugh within the first minute; that's a good sign, not a distraction.

After the activity

  • Was it easier or harder to describe yourself through someone else's eyes than directly?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work does considering how someone else sees you change how you show up?

Learning outcome. Participants leave having practiced a bit of perspective-taking, often revealing something genuine along the way.
