Overview

Purpose. Removes the awkwardness of self-introduction by having a partner do it for you.

When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.

Best for. Any group size, in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • No materials to gather; just read through the steps once before you run it.

Room setup. Open enough floor space for pairs to spread out and hear only their own partner.

Virtual setup. Run this over video call using breakout rooms for the paired interviews.

Hybrid setup. Pair remote participants with each other for the interview round.

Materials.

How to Conduct

  1. Split participants into pairs.
  2. Give pairs a few minutes to interview each other, focusing on finding out something the wider group probably doesn't already know.
  3. Bring the group back together.
  4. Go around the room, with each person introducing their partner to everyone, sharing what they learned.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Most groups laugh within the first minute; that's a good sign, not a distraction.

After the activity

DEBRIEF QUESTIONS

  • What part of “Introducing Each Other” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
  • Did it feel different being introduced by someone else, rather than introducing yourself?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work does having someone else vouch for you or introduce you change how you're received?

Learning outcome. Participants leave having been introduced by a partner, often surfacing details a self- introduction would have skipped.
