Overview
Purpose. A memory-chain icebreaker that naturally drills names.
When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.
Best for. Any group size, in person.
Facilitator preparation
- No materials to gather; just read through the steps once before you run it.
Room setup. Arrange seating so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.
Virtual setup. Works over video call using participant-list order for the chain.
Hybrid setup. Alternate between in-room and remote participants as the chain continues.
Materials.
How to Conduct
- Ask everyone to sit or stand where they can see each other.
- Explain the format: you'll start by naming one item you'd pack in a suitcase for vacation.
- The next person repeats your item, then adds their own.
- Each following person repeats everyone's items before them, in order, then adds their own.
- Continue until the last person has repeated the whole chain and added their own.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP
- Most groups laugh within the first minute; that's a good sign, not a distraction.
Trainer's Reference: handling the memory chain
Like other memory-chain games in this handbook, this naturally gets harder near the end; that's expected, not a sign anything's gone wrong. If someone forgets an item, let the group help with a friendly reminder rather than treating it as a test. If the group is larger than about 15, split into two smaller circles so the chain doesn't get so long that it drags.

REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Where in your day-to-day work do you need to hold a growing list of details in mind at once?
Learning outcome. Participants leave having practiced active listening and recall, in a light, low-pressure format.
