Overview
Purpose. Surfaces the emotional tone participants bring into the room, useful for the facilitator too.
When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.
Best for. Any group size, in person.
Facilitator preparation
- Gather: one envelope and access to colored markers per participant.
- Plan where you'll safely store the envelopes until the closing activity. See Trainer's Reference below.
Room setup. Arrange seating so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.
Virtual setup. This works best in person. If you must run it virtually, have participants draw on a shared digital canvas or describe their snapshot in chat instead.
Hybrid setup. Give remote participants the same digital option while in-room participants use physical envelopes.
Materials. Envelopes, coloured markers
How to Conduct
- Gather envelopes and colored markers.
- Ask participants to draw a “snapshot” of how they're feeling right now, using pictures, symbols, and a few words, on the front of an envelope.
- Give everyone a few minutes to draw.
- Go around the group, or in small groups if large, and have each person briefly explain their snapshot.
- Collect and keep the envelopes safely; you'll reuse them later. See Trainer's Reference below.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP
- A few participants may hang back at first; let them opt in when they're ready rather than forcing a turn.
Trainer's Reference: the envelope is reused at the end
The envelope isn't just a canvas, it's meant to be kept and reused. At the end of the course, hand the same envelopes back and ask participants to draw a new “snapshot” of how they feel now, then compare it to the one they drew at the start. Keep the envelopes somewhere safe in between, and make a note in your session plan to bring them back out for the closing activity.
After the activity
DEBRIEF QUESTIONS
- What part of “Snapshot” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
- Was it easier to express how you're feeling through symbols than through words?
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Where in your day-to-day work would checking in on how you're feeling, before diving in, change how you show up?
Learning outcome. Participants leave having named their current state honestly, and set up a natural comparison point for later in the program.
