Overview

Purpose. Low-stakes personal sharing that builds warmth without requiring vulnerability.

When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.

Best for. Any group size, virtual or in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • Pick a playful self-disclosure prompt. See Trainer's Reference below for a starter bank.
  • Decide whether participants will answer in pairs first, then share back, or go straight to the whole group.

Room setup. Open enough floor space for pairs to spread out and hear only their own partner.

Virtual setup. Run this over video call using breakout rooms for pairs, and the main room for whole-group sharing.

Hybrid setup. Give remote participants an equal way to take part, for example a shared chat thread mirroring the in-room discussion.

Materials. A prepared question list

How to Conduct

  1. Pick a playful self-disclosure prompt (see Trainer's Reference below for a starter bank).
  2. Decide whether participants will answer in pairs first, then share back to the group, or go straight to the whole group.
  3. Give a moment of thinking time, then go around (or through pairs) so everyone answers.
  4. If working in pairs, invite one or two people to share what they learned about their partner with the whole room.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • A few participants may hang back at first; let them opt in when they're ready rather than forcing a turn.

Trainer's Reference: a ready-to-use prompt bank

Seven prompts to start with: What's your strangest talent? What do you pretend to hate but actually love? What's a food combination you love that others find weird? What's a small thing you're irrationally good at? What's your most-used emoji? What's a fact about you that surprises people? What's your go-to karaoke song?
