Overview

Purpose. Adds a playful personality-quiz flavor to a standard name-card icebreaker.

When to use. Early in a session, especially with a group that doesn't know each other well yet.

Best for. Any group size, in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • Gather: name tent cards and markers.
  • Review the Trainer's Reference below so you're ready to give the “shape meanings” on the spot.

Room setup. Arrange seating so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.

Virtual setup. This works best in person. If you must run it virtually, have participants draw their shape on a shared slide or hold it up to the camera.

Hybrid setup. Give remote participants the same option while in-room participants use physical name tents.

Materials. Name tent cards, markers

How to Conduct

  1. Give each participant a name tent card and a marker.
  2. Ask everyone to draw one of four shapes on their card, whichever one they're drawn to: a circle, a square, a triangle, or a squiggly “Z” shape.
  3. Once everyone's drawn their shape, ask a few participants to explain why they chose theirs.
  4. Reveal the playful “personality meaning” behind each shape (see Trainer's Reference below), and let people react to how well, or badly, it fits.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Most groups laugh within the first minute; that's a good sign, not a distraction.

Trainer's Reference: what each shape playfully represents

This is a well-known, lighthearted facilitation exercise, not real psychology; say so upfront, the same way you would with any playful personality read. The traditional meanings are:

Circle: people-oriented, values harmony, often a natural peacemaker who prefers to avoid conflict.

Square: organized and detail-oriented, likes structure, rules, and a clear plan.

Triangle: a natural leader, decisive and competitive, likes to be in charge.

Squiggly / Z: creative and spontaneous, dislikes routine, generates a lot of new ideas. As with any activity like this, keep it light: it's a fun icebreaker, not a real assessment of anyone's personality.

After the activity

DEBRIEF QUESTIONS

  • What part of “Circle, Square, Triangle, or Z” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
  • Did the shape meaning feel accurate, surprisingly close, or completely off?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work does knowing a colleague's working style, structured versus spontaneous, for example, help you collaborate better?

Learning outcome. Participants leave having reflected playfully on their own working style, and learned a bit about others' too.
