Overview

Purpose. Combines team formation with a light mental challenge.

When to use. Whenever you need to split a large group into smaller working teams quickly and fairly.

Best for. Groups of up to 26, in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • Gather: letter Post-its or name tags, enough for every participant to get one letter each.
  • Plan your letters in advance rather than choosing them at random. See Trainer's Reference below.

Room setup. Enough open space for participants to mingle and negotiate their groupings.

Virtual setup. Not well suited to virtual; use a random breakout-room assignment instead.

Hybrid setup. Not well suited to hybrid; assign remote participants to groups separately using a random method.

Materials. Post-it notes with letters, Letter Post-its

How to Conduct

  1. Before the session, prepare enough letter Post-its so every participant gets one letter each. See Trainer's Reference below for how to plan the letters.
  2. Hand out or stick one letter to each participant as they arrive, or at the start of the activity.
  3. Explain the challenge: within five minutes, each person must find at least three other people whose letters can combine with theirs to spell a real word, in any order, of four or more letters.
  4. Set a 5-minute timer and let the group mingle and negotiate.
  5. Once a group has formed a word, that becomes their small group for whatever comes next.
  6. If anyone is left without a full group when time's up, quickly help them merge into an existing group or form a smaller word together.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • There may be a quiet stretch while people process; don't rush to fill that silence.

Trainer's Reference: planning letters so words are actually findable

Because this activity depends on real words being spellable from a random set of letters, it helps to plan your letter distribution in advance rather than handing out truly random letters. Include a healthy mix of common letters, vowels, S, T, R, N, so groups can realistically find a word within five minutes. If you're short on prep time, a simpler backup is to pre-plan a set of words yourself, break each one into its individual letters, then shuffle all the letters together before handing them out; this guarantees every group has a findable word, even though it isn't obvious to them in advance.

After the activity

DEBRIEF QUESTIONS

  • What part of “Alphabet Soup (Grouping)” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
  • How did your group figure out which word to aim for, once you started comparing letters?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work do you need to quickly find the right people to solve a problem together?

Learning outcome. Participants leave in new, self-organized groups, having practiced a bit of quick negotiation and problem-solving along the way.

Variations and cautions
