Overview
Purpose. Builds observation and connection through physical mimicry.
When to use. Early in a session, especially with a group that doesn't know each other well yet.
Best for. Any group size, in person.
Facilitator preparation
- No materials to gather; just read through the steps once before you run it.
Room setup. Open enough floor space for pairs to spread out and hear only their own partner.
Virtual setup. This works best in person. If you must run it virtually, have pairs mirror each other over video call in breakout rooms.
Hybrid setup. Pair remote participants with each other in breakout rooms alongside the in-room pairing.
Materials.
How to Conduct
- Ask participants to mingle briefly (a “mingle mingle” round); when you call stop, whoever is nearest becomes their partner.
- Have each pair decide who will be the “mirror” first.
- The non-mirror partner makes slow, simple movements; the mirror copies them as closely as possible, as if reflecting them.
- After a minute or two, have the pair switch roles.
- Repeat with new partners for another round if time allows.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP
- A few participants may hang back at first; let them opt in when they're ready rather than forcing a turn.
After the activity
DEBRIEF QUESTIONS
- What part of “Be My Mirror” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
- Was it easier to lead the movements or to mirror your partner?
REFLECTION QUESTIONS
- Where in your day-to-day work does closely observing someone else help you work better together?
Learning outcome. Participants leave having practiced close observation and nonverbal connection with a partner.
