Overview

Purpose. A trivia-flavored twist on the classic matching mixer.

When to use. Early in a session, especially with a group that doesn't know each other well yet.

Best for. Any group size, in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • Prepare a set of trivia question and answer cards in advance, one card per participant, so every question has its matching answer somewhere in the room.

Room setup. Enough open space for participants to mingle and compare cards verbally.

Virtual setup. This works best in person. If you must run it virtually, assign matching pairs directly into breakout rooms instead.

Hybrid setup. Assign remote participants into pairs separately, then announce all pairs together.

Materials. Prepared trivia question/answer cards

How to Conduct

  1. Before the session, prepare a set of trivia question and answer cards, enough for every participant to hold one card.
  2. Hand out one card to each participant, some holding questions, others holding the matching answers.
  3. Explain the challenge: mingle and speak your card's content aloud to others, without showing it, to find your matching question or answer.
  4. Once paired, have each pair confirm their match and introduce themselves.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Expect a little shyness in the first 30 seconds, followed by a quick warm-up once one or two people go first.

After the activity

DEBRIEF QUESTIONS

  • What part of “Card Match” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
  • Did you learn anything from the trivia itself, beyond finding your match?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work does describing something out loud, rather than showing it, change how clearly you have to think?

Learning outcome. Participants leave having found a partner and picked up a bit of trivia along the way.
