Overview

Purpose. Ensures everyone receives, and gives, genuine positive recognition.

When to use. Early in a session, especially with a group that doesn't know each other well yet.

Best for. Any group size, in person or online.

Facilitator preparation

  • No materials strictly needed; optionally prepare slips of paper or a shared digital board to track who's been recognized.

Room setup. Cluster seating into small islands of 3–6 people, spaced enough apart that groups don't overhear each other.

Virtual setup. Run this over video call using a shared chat thread or digital board so everyone can see who's been recognized.

Hybrid setup. Give remote participants the same shared board while in-room participants pass messages directly.

Materials. None (or slips/Jamboard)

How to Conduct

  1. Explain the format: one participant shares a kind, genuine message with another person in the room.
  2. That person then passes a kind message on to someone who hasn't received one yet.
  3. Continue the chain, each person passing a message to someone new, until everyone in the room has been recognized.
  4. If the chain stalls (everyone left has already received one), have the facilitator restart it with a new starting person.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • A few participants may hang back at first; let them opt in when they're ready rather than forcing a turn.

After the activity

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work could a bit more genuine, specific recognition go a long way?
