Overview

Purpose. A quick reaction-based energizer that also builds group focus.

When to use. Early in a session, especially with a group that doesn't know each other well yet.

Best for. Groups of around 20, in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • No materials to gather; just read through the steps once before you run it.

Room setup. Two facing lines with enough space for everyone to jump forward and backward freely.

Virtual setup. This activity requires physical movement and space, and doesn't translate to a virtual format; skip or substitute a different energizer for remote sessions.

Hybrid setup. Not suitable for hybrid groups; run only when the full group is together in person.

Materials.

How to Conduct

  1. Have participants form two facing lines, with an imaginary line between them representing a riverbank.
  2. Explain the rule: when you call “River!” everyone jumps forward across the line; when you call “Bank!” everyone jumps backward.
  3. Start calling “River” and “Bank” at a steady pace so everyone gets the hang of it.
  4. Gradually speed up your calls, and occasionally call the same word twice in a row to catch people off guard.
  5. Anyone who jumps the wrong way is out; continue until only a few players remain, or time runs out.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Expect a burst of energy and laughter once the pace picks up and people start jumping the wrong way.

After the activity

DEBRIEF QUESTIONS

  • What part of “River and Bank” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
  • What made it hardest to keep up as the calls got faster?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work do you need to react quickly and correctly under increasing pressure?

Learning outcome. Participants leave with a quick burst of shared energy and focus, ready to move into the next part of the session.
