Overview
Purpose. Lighthearted way to build camaraderie and shared laughter.
When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.
Best for. Any group size, in person.
Facilitator preparation
- No materials to gather; just read through the steps once before you run it.
Room setup. Arrange seating so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.
Virtual setup. This works best in person. If you must run it virtually, adapt to talents that show well on camera.
Hybrid setup. Give remote participants an equal chance to volunteer and demonstrate over video.
Materials.
How to Conduct
- Ask for volunteers who are willing to show off a quirky personal party trick or hidden talent (wiggling ears, fast talking, a spot-on impression, and so on).
- Let each volunteer take a brief turn demonstrating their talent to the group.
- Applaud and celebrate each one, regardless of how impressive it is; the fun is in the variety, not the skill level.
- Continue until all volunteers have gone, or time runs out.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP
- A few participants may hang back at first; let them opt in when they're ready rather than forcing a turn.
Trainer's Reference: this is volunteer-only
Unlike most icebreakers in this handbook, don't go around the room expecting everyone to take a turn here. It's completely normal, and fine, if only two or three people volunteer; quality and variety matter more than full participation for this one.
