Overview

Purpose. A gentle, forgiving way to drill name memory.

When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.

Best for. Any group size, in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • Gather: a soft toy.
  • Do a first round of names before this activity if the group hasn't met yet.

Room setup. Arrange seating so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.

Virtual setup. This works best in person. If you must run it virtually, call on people by name instead of tossing a physical object.

Hybrid setup. Alternate between in-room and remote participants as you go.

Materials. A soft toy

How to Conduct

  1. Do a first round of names first, if the group hasn't met yet.
  2. Gather a soft toy.
  3. Toss the toy to someone while saying their name out loud.
  4. If you said their name correctly, they toss it on to someone else the same way, saying that person's name.
  5. If a name is wrong or forgotten, gently toss it back to the same person so they can try again before continuing.
  6. Continue for as long as time allows.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Expect a little shyness in the first 30 seconds, followed by a quick warm-up once one or two people go first.

After the activity
