Overview

Purpose. Opens the floor for encouragement and mutual support around personal goals.

When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.

Best for. Any group size, in person or online.

Facilitator preparation

  • No materials to gather; just read through the steps once before you run it.

Room setup. Cluster seating into small islands of 3–6 people, spaced enough apart that groups don't overhear each other.

Virtual setup. Run this over video call using breakout rooms for small groups, and the main room for whole- group sharing.

Hybrid setup. Give remote participants an equal way to take part, for example a shared chat thread mirroring the in-room discussion.

Materials.

How to Conduct

  1. Ask participants to think of a few items on their personal bucket list, goals or dreams they want to achieve outside of work.
  2. Give everyone a minute to think.
  3. Go around the group, having each person share one or two items.
  4. Encourage brief, genuine encouragement from the group after each share, a “that's great!” or a follow-up question, rather than moving on too quickly.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Most groups laugh within the first minute; that's a good sign, not a distraction.

After the activity

DEBRIEF QUESTIONS

  • What part of “Bucket List” felt easy, and what part felt harder than expected?
  • Did anyone's bucket list item surprise you or make you think of something you'd add to your own?

REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  • Where in your day-to-day work could a bit of encouragement around someone's personal goals go a long way?

Learning outcome. Participants leave having shared a genuine personal goal, and having felt a bit of encouragement from the group.

Variations and cautions
