Overview

Purpose. An easy, repeatable way to open recurring meetings with light personal sharing.

When to use. In the first 15 minutes of a session, once names are known and the group is settling in.

Best for. Any group size, virtual or in person.

Facilitator preparation

  • Pick one simple question to open with. See Trainer's Reference below for a starter bank of 10.

Room setup. Arrange seating so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.

Virtual setup. Works well over video call; go through the participant list in order.

Hybrid setup. Alternate between an in-room and a remote participant for each turn.

Materials. A prepared question list

How to Conduct

  1. Pick a simple question everyone can answer quickly (see Trainer's Reference below for a starter bank).
  2. At the start of the meeting, ask everyone to answer the same question, one at a time.
  3. Go around the room, or the participant list if virtual, until everyone, including you, has answered.
  4. For future meetings, rotate in a new question daily or weekly to keep it fresh.

WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP

  • Expect a little shyness in the first 30 seconds, followed by a quick warm-up once one or two people go first.

Trainer's Reference: a ready-to-use question bank

Ten questions to rotate through:

What's your favorite season?

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

What's the best meal you've had recently?

What's a small thing that made you smile this week?

If you could learn any skill instantly, what would it be?

What's your go-to comfort food?

What's one thing on your to-do list you're avoiding?

What's a book, show, or movie you'd recommend?

What's your ideal weekend?

What's one word to describe your week so far?

After the activity
