Overview
Purpose. A quick mental warm-up with a built-in competitive edge.
When to use. As a flexible warm-up, or to fill a few spare minutes before a session officially starts.
Best for. Any group size, in person or online.
Facilitator preparation
- Prepare a short list of topics in advance. See Trainer's Reference below for a starter list.
Room setup. Arrange seating so everyone can see and hear each other clearly.
Virtual setup. Run this over video call, calling out topics and letters and taking answers by unmute or chat.
Hybrid setup. Make sure remote participants are unmuted and can jump in as quickly as everyone in the room.
Materials. A prepared topic list
How to Conduct
- Announce a topic and a random letter together, for example “countries, letter B.” (See Trainer's Reference below for a starter list of topics.)
- Give the group a few seconds to shout out a matching word or phrase (for example, “Brazil” or “Belgium”).
- Allow some friendly back-and-forth or disputes over whether an answer counts; that's part of the fun.
- Move to a new topic and letter, and repeat for as many rounds as time allows.
WHAT TO EXPECT FROM THE GROUP
- Most groups laugh within the first minute; that's a good sign, not a distraction.
Trainer's Reference: a ready-to-use topic bank
Eight topics to start with: foods; countries; movies; “things Granny would say”; job titles; things found in a kitchen; superheroes; things you'd find at the beach.
